
Sonnanstine Shuts Down Chiefs 3-0

Battle Creek, MIâ The Peoria Chiefs ran into a hot right-hander named Andy Sonnanstine Friday night and lost to the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays 3-0. The Chiefs finished the road trip 5-3 and now move to 27-28 on the season heading into this weekend's series at O'Brien Field.
Southwest Michigan scored the games first run in the 2nd inning against Chiefs starter Chris Shaver. Travis Schlichting was hit by a pitch and sacrificed to second. After a strikeout, Tommy Nichols singled up the middle scoring Schlichting for the 1-0 D-Rays lead.
The D-Rays added to their lead in the 5th inning with a one-out rally. Christian Lopez started the rally with a single and stolen base. Shaun Cumberland doubled home Lopez to put the home team up 2-0. In the 7th the D-Rays pushed to a 3-0 lead when Fernando Perez scored from third on a balk by reliever Jon Hunton.
The Chiefs were hitless against Andy Sonnanstine through the first five innings. In the 6th, with two outs, Sam Fuld doubled to left for Peoria's first hit of the game. He was left at second as Sonnanstine recovered to strike out Eric Patterson.
Sonnanstine allowed just one hit over eight shutout innings to improve to 4-3 on the season. The righty struck out eight and didn't allow a walk while shutting down the Chiefs high-powered offense.
Shaver (2-5) took the loss despite six solid innings in which he allowed just two runs on five hits. The left-hander tied his season and career high with nine strikeouts while walking two.

Chris Shaver (SP)- The Chiefs lefty deserved a better fate tying a season high with nine strikeouts. He allowed just two runs on five hits in six innings but took the loss as the Chiefs were shutout.
Notes... Luis Montanez was 0-for-3 snapping a six game hit streak...The Chiefs have now been shutout four times this season...The two teams tied the season series 4-4...The Chiefs now return home for a four game series against the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays)...The first game is Saturday at 6:30 PM and will feature a post-game fireworks show...RH Lee Gwaltney (3-1) will start for the Chiefs and LH Chi-Hung Cheng (3-3) will start for Lansing...The game can be heard on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
