Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- Andy Sonnanstine shut down the Peoria Chiefs in a quick 3-0 victory Friday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.

In a game that went just 2:01, the Devil Rays scored first on a Tommy Nichols RBI single to make it 1-0 in the second inning. A Shaun Cumberland RBI double plated Christian Lopez for a 2-0 lead in inning number four. The Rays finished their scoring in the seventh when a balk by Peoria pitcher Jon Hunton awarded Fernando Perez home plate.

The last two runs were more than enough as Sonnanstine (4-3) held the Cheifs hitless until an Aaron Fuld double in the sixth inning. Sonnanstine scattered eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter. He now has 63 strikeouts and only seven walks in 70 innings this season.

Southwest Michigan split the series with Peoria with two wins in four tries and concluded their eight-game homestand with four victories.

The Rays will head to Wisconsin for a four-game series before returning home for a Thirsty Thursday on June 9 against the West Michigan Whitecaps in a game that will start at 7:05 p.m.
