Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Deacon Burns was 4-4 with two doubles, an RBI, a stolen base, and three runs scored to lead the Beloit Snappers (27-28) to a 6-1 victory over the Burlington Bees (25-29) at Community Field tonight. With the loss, the Bees end up splitting the series with the Snappers and finish 5-3 on this home stand.
The Bees could muster just one run on three hits against three Snappers pitchers. Starter Josh Hill (1-2) allowed a run on two hits in five innings for his first win of the year. The Bees only run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hill walked Geraldo Valentin who went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a throwing error by the catcher Javier Sanchez. After a walk to Mario Lisson put runners on the corners with nobody out, Rusty Brown drove a ball to the wall in right-center field. Valentin scored easily, but Lisson was cut down on a perfect relay throw to the plate. The Bees would get just one more single from Ed Lucas in the sixth inning. Kyle Aselton and Kevin Culpepper each pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Bees' starter Luis Cota (2-3) allowed three runs (two earned) in eight hits in five innings. Sanchez got the Snappers on the board with an RBI single in the second. A two-out single by Mark Zamojc in the third plated Burns after his first double to make it 2-0. Burns then singled to leadoff the fifth, stole second, went to third when the throw went off the glove of Irving Falu for an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Pickrel. Greg Atencio pitched the final four innings for Bees and allowed the final three runs (one earned). Trevor Plouffe led off the seventh with a double and scored as Burns ripped a double past a diving Brown at first. In the eighth, Zamojc singled to left, went all the way to third when Lucas misplayed the ball for an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dwayne White. In the ninth, Burns was hit by a pitch, went to second on a passed ball, to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Tarrance Patterson reached on a fielder's choice.
The Bees go back on the road to start a four-game series with the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field tomorrow night at 6:00 Central time. RH Patrick Green (3-3, 3.74) will start for the Bees against RH Homer Bailey (1-2, 2.97) for the Dragons. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
