June 3, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (23-31) put up six runs on six hits against a worn South Bend Silver Hawks (33-22) bullpen on route to an 8-4 win in front of 8,828 at Fifth Third Field on Friday night. The Dragons sent 10 batters to the plate in a five run, five hit sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and gain a four game split with the Midwest League's Eastern Division leaders.
Before the Dragons bats knocked around the South Bend pen, starting pitcher Philippe Valiquette (ND), set the early tone, retiring the first 12 hitters he faced. Despite earning no decision in the game, the left hander was the best he has been in his young professional career tossing 5.2 innings. Valiquette allowed two runs on two hits and lowered his earned run average from 5.34 to 4.75 with the outing. He struck out five and walked two before running out of pitches with two out in the sixth.
Dayton got on the board with single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings off Hawks starter Ross Ohlendorf (ND). A one out walk to Phil Gentry in the third and an RBI double by Paul Janish put the Dragons on top 1-0. An inning later it was station to station baseball from the biggest Dragon, 6'3" 265 Bobby Mosby. A one out single by "Big Mo," a sac bunt from Drew Anderson and a pair of wild pitches by Ohlendorf gave Dayton a 2-0 lead.
South Bend was the MWL's best hitting team with a .281 batting average entering play and the visitors finally got to Valiquette in the fifth. Javier Brito reached on an error by the Dayton pitcher to break up the perfect game bid. Two batters later, with one down, Carlos Gonzalez took Valiquette deep and out in right for a two run homer to tie the game at 2-2.
Ohlendorf departed after the fifth, surrendering five hits and two runs, with five K's, three walks and a pair of wild pitches. South Bend, who used seven pitchers in Thursday night's 12-8 11 inning win over Dayton, turned to Esmerling Vazquez (LP, 1-2) who threw 0.1 innings in the extra inning win. A lead off walk to Tonys Gutierrez got the inning going for the Miami Valley's team. After a strikeout for the first out of the frame, Anderson followed with an RBI triple for a 3-2 lead. Chad Ziemendorf's RBI single made it 4-2 in favor of Dayton. Janish added a two RBI single scoring Ziemendorf and Cody Strait for a 6-2 lead. With two down, Jeremiah Piepkorn extended his hit streak to 10 straight games with an RBI hit to center scoring Phil Gentry giving Dayton a 7-2 lead.
Anderson made it 8-2 Dayton with a laser to left for his third home run of the season. The solo shot, Anderson's second against South Bend came off Hipolito Guerrero, who replaced Vazquez with one out in the sixth.
Brad Morenko (WP, 5-1) took over for Valiquette with two down in the sixth inning and kept the Silver Hawks off the board until the top of the eighth, when Agustin Murillo crushed a Morenko offering completely out of the ball park in left for a two run homer, his team leading 10th of the season. Murillo increased his MWL best RBI total to 39. The shot got South Bend to within 8-4, but the Hawks would get no closer.
The right hander retired the last four batters he faced, including getting the side out in order in the ninth inning to pick up his team leading fifth win of the season.
The Dragons continue the home stand at Fifth Third Field on Saturday night opening a four game series with the Burlington Bees. Saturday's game will be televised live by Time Warner Television on Channel 25 in the Miami Valley. 1410 ESPN radio will carry the game live on radio beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM.
