Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING â The Toronto Blue Jays have announced today some moves that will shake up the current Lugnuts roster. First baseman Chip Cannon has been promoted to Dunedin in the Florida State League and catcher Joey Wolfe has voluntarily announced his retirement, marking the two moves off of the current roster. Replacing Cannon and Wolfe on the active roster are Charlie Anderson and Aaron Mathews, who will join the team in Lansing today as the team wraps up its four-game series with the Clinton LumberKings at Oldsmobile Park.
Wolfe will leave the Lugnuts after playing in 24 games and batting .306. He clubbed out four homers and drove in 10 runs while serving primarily as the designated hitter in games in which he took part in. The Aptos, CA native injured his hamstring in a game on May 20th in Battle Creek, the last action he saw for the ballclub.
Cannon finished off his Lugnuts career in fantastic fashion last night as he became the third player in franchise history to hit for the cycle in Lansing's wild 13-inning 14 -13 win over Clinton. The Charleston, SC native leaves the team as the current league leader in homers with 11. In 46 games, Cannon hit .268 with 36 RBI, which is the team high mark as well. The slugger becomes the third Lansing player this season to join Dunedin, following in the footsteps of Casey Janssen and Danny Hill, who were promoted in May.
Anderson and Mathews will join the club today from extended spring training in Florida, bringing the active roster to 25 players. The 23-year-old Anderson should have no problem fitting in to Lansing as he hails from Detroit originally. A former player at the University of Detroit, Anderson was a 35th round pick by Toronto in the 2004 draft. He spent the 2004 campaign in Pulaski where he batted .311 in 52 games with six homers and 20 RBI for the Blue Jays.
Mathews also was a 2004 draft pick and hails from Houston, Texas. The 19th round pick in 2004 from Oregon State University spent his first season as a pro player in Auburn. In 70 games for the Doubledays, he batted .265 with 26 RBI and was second in the league with six triples.
The Lugnuts wrap up their four-game series with the Clinton LumberKings tonight at 7:05 p.m. with a post-game fireworks display presented by LAFCU following the game.
