Bullpen collapse leads to series split

COMSTOCK PARK - Andrew Kown pitched seven innings and scatted nine hits to allow just one run, but the Whitecaps bullpen gave up eight Kane County runs over the final two innings in a 9-3 victory for the Cougars. Tony Peralta took the loss and was charged with all three runs that scored in the eighth. Jay Sborz was on the mound when two of those runs crossed the plate. Sborz faced four batters, but recorded only one out. Kane County was in front, 4-2. West Michigan cut the lead in half in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a walk to Nick McIntyre, and error on a pick-off try that put McIntyre at third. He scored on a ground out by Jeff Frazier, which made the score, 4-3. The next three batters go aboard to load the bases with one out, but Jody Roughton grounded into a double play to end the inning. Kane County put the game away in the top of the ninth with a five run outburst. Collin Mahoney faced four batters but did not record an out, thanks to an error by Wilkin Ramirez that started the inning. Ed Clelland came on with the score 5-3, but allowed a two-run double by Tommy Everidge and a two-run single by Nicholas Blasi to complete the rally. The Whitecaps took a 1-0 lead in the first when Steve Young scored from second on a ground ball by Frazier and subsequent throwing error by third baseman Myron Leslie. After the Cougars tied the game in the fourth, Wilkin Ramirez scored in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Parrish. Jared Trout pitched seven innings for Kane County and allowed two runs on six hits to earn the victory. West Michigan and Kane County split the four game series, 2-2.
