Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 3, 2005) - The Kansas City Royals and Burlington Bees announce several roster moves today. Following last night's game, RHP Billy Buckner and CF Alan Moye were promoted to High Desert, the Royals' High-A affiliate in the California League. The Bees also receive three new players to fill the active roster back to 25. C Damaso Espino joins the Bees from High Desert. Espino played third base for the Bees in 2003. RHP Justin Sherman and OF Jared Ellis join the club from extended spring training.

Buckner pitched a career-high 7.2 innings last night and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits while walking two and struck out six. All three earned runs came on solo homers for Beloit. Buckner leaves the Bees with a 3-7 record and a 3.88 ERA after eleven starts. He is tied with Alexander Smit of Beloit for the Midwest League lead in losses and home runs allowed. He has pitched at least six innings in each of his last six starts and was 2-3 with a 3.53 ERA in May with 38 strikeouts in 35.2 innings.

Moye is batting .259 with a team-high four home runs and 32 RBI. He is one of four players tied for fifth in the Midwest League in RBI. After a slow start, Moye turned in an outstanding May, hitting .309 with all four of his homers and 23 RBI. Moye had an eight-game hitting streak from May 3rd - 12th during which he hit .464 and turned in a three-hit, 5 RBI day on May 30th against Dayton.

Espino was batting .213 with a homer and 12 RBI in 25 games with the Mavericks this year. He made the transition from third base to catcher late last year in Wilmington. He had an outstanding season with the Bees in '03. He hit .285 with 25 doubles, 3 homers, and 88 RBI in 130 games. His 88 RBI are tied for tenth on the Bees single season list. Sherman joined the Bees late last season after going 8-1 with a 5.54 ERA in 10 games (9 starts) with Idaho Falls. He left as the Pioneer League's leader in wins and was named the Idaho Falls Pitcher of the Year by the Royals. He pitched well for the Bees to finish the season, going 3-1 with a 4.26 ERA in four games including three starts and one complete game. He walked just three batters in 25.1 innings with the Bees. He had injury problems during spring training that kept him in Arizona to begin the season. Ellis was a non-drafted free agent signed out of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma last year. He played in 53 games in the Arizona Rookie League and hit .229 with 4 home runs and 28 RBI.

All three players will be in uniform and available for tonight's game against the Beloit Snappers at 7:00. The Bees are 5-2 so far and wrap up this eight-game home stand tonight on a TGI Bud Night with 2-for-$3 specials on all cans of Budweiser products. Fans will also receive a color 8x10 photo of this year's team sponsored by Burlington Trailways and Photovisions. The gates will open at 6:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
