Sod Poodles Battle Late, Fall in Game Two 8-4 to Drillers

AMARILLO, Texas - The Sod Poodles fell 8-4 to the Tulsa Drillers Tuesday night in front of 5,083 at HODGETOWN. Kyle Overstreet led the Sod Poodles offensively going 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Sod Poodles starter MacKenzie Gore tossed 1.2 innings in his fifth Texas League start, striking out five of the six batters he faced. The Sod Poodles remain one game up on Midland in the Texas League second-half South Division standings.

Tulsa struck first Tuesday night plating one run on two hits in the third inning. Jared Walker started the half with a walk and advanced to second via a Markus Solbach sacrifice bunt. Drew Avans then hit an RBI single to center field. One batter later, Jeter Downs hit a two-run home run to left field to give the Drillers the early 3-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Tulsa added two more runs to extend their advantage to 5-0. Errol Robinson singled to left-center field to start the inning. Carlos Rincon then doubled down the left-field line to place runners on second and third. Walker brought Robinson home on a sacrifice fly while Solbach hit an RBI double down the right-field line to plate Rincon.

The Drillers stretched their lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning. A pair of singles by Avans and Downs placed runners on first and second base. Connor Wong then roped a single to left field to score Avans before Omar Estevez ended the inning with a pop out to the catcher in foul territory.

Amarillo answered in the bottom of the sixth inning finding life with four runs of their own. Owen Miller and Luis Torrens started the momentum, reaching on an error and base hit respectively with one out. After Hudson Potts popped out, Kyle Overstreet knocked a two-out RBI base hit through the hole at second base to score Miller. One batter later, Tyler Benson belted an RBI single to right field. In the pitcher's spot, reliever Blake Rogers came to the plate and helped his own cause with a double to left-center to score Torrens and Benson, cutting the Tulsa lead to 6-4.

In the seventh inning, the Drillers tacked on one run on two hits. After two strikeouts to start the inning, Rincon singled to left field. Walker reached base via a walk to place runners on first and second base. Pinch hitter Chris Parmelee followed with an RBI single to left field to take a 7-4 advantage.

Tulsa added another insurance run in the eighth inning thanks to Wong's solo home run to left field to extend the Drillers lead to 8-4.

Amarillo entered the ninth inning trailing four runs and made things interesting with late pressure. Taylor Trammell and Ivan Castillo both worked walks to start the inning while Edward Olivares followed with a fielder's choice groundout to place runners on third and first base and mark the first out. After a walk to Miller to load the bases, Torrens was unable to produce with a strikeout swinging. As Amarillo's tying run and last chance, Potts saw an opportunity on a 2-1 pitch but popped out to Walker in foul territory to end the contest.

The Sod Poodles continue their four-game series against the Tulsa Drillers Wednesday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.

Tomorrow Morning Preview: The Sod Poodles continue their four-game series with the Tulsa Drillers Wednesday morning in downtown Amarillo in game three. Lake Bachar will get the nod with Amarillo while Parker Curry is slated to start for Tulsa in the morning contest.

MacKKKKKenzie: Southpaw and Padres top pitching prospect was untouchable in his first start for Amarillo since August 2. He tossed a shortened start of one and two-thirds innings and struck out five of his six batters faced.

Day Games Are Good: The Sod Poodles head into their second morning game at HODGETOWN with a 10-8 record in day games overall in 2019. In the Soddies' first and only other morning contest this season, on May 22, Amarillo won 7-6 over Corpus Christi.

52 Inaugural Players: In the Sod Poodles inaugural season so far, Amarillo has welcomed 52 different players - 21 players and 31 pitchers. On Tuesday night, Tom Colletti marked the 31st pitcher to appear and 52nd player overall on the Amarillo all-time list.

Multi-Hit Kyle: Kyle Overstreet collected his second-consecutive multi-hit performance on Tuesday night. Over the last two nights, he has gone 5-for-9 with 2 RBI.

RAKE Rogers: Reliever Blake Rogers slugged his second hit this season in big fashion with a two-out, two-RBI double in game two against Tulsa. It marked his first career extra-base hit and the ninth hit overall by a Sod Poodles pitcher this season.

A Couple Trios: Tyler Benson collected his first-career three-hit game at Double-A in just his eighth overall appearance at the level with Amarillo. It marked his sixth-career three-hit game and first since July 22 with Fort Wayne. Kyle Overstreet also collected a three-hit night, marking his 22nd overall in his career.

27 Combined: The combined 27 hits between Amarillo and Tulsa on Tuesday night came one short of the most combined by two teams at HODGETOWN during their inaugural campaign. On May 13, the Sod Poodles and RockHounds combined for 28 hits.

Hitting Stats: The Sod Poodles currently rank 2nd in Double-A baseball with a .259 team batting average. Amarillo sits fourth in all of Double-A with 607 runs scored total.

Drillers Recap: The Sod Poodles welcome the Tulsa Drillers to HODGETOWN for the second time this season for a four-game series. Amarillo holds a record of 4-8 against the Drillers. At home, the Sod Poodles are now 2-3 against Tulsa with one walk-off win on June 16. The Sod Poodles did not fare too well in Tulsa as they went 2-5 at ONEOK Field. Seven of the 11 matchups against the Soddies and Drillers have been decided by two or fewer runs this season.

Magic Number: The Sod Poodles magic number to clinch the second-half South Division entering Wednesday's game is six games.

Playoff Picture: The Sod Poodles head into their first-ever Texas League Postseason in their inaugural season beginning Wednesday, September 4 at HODGETOWN in the South Division Championship Series. Amarillo will host the first two games on Wednesday, September 4 and Thursday, September 5. An opponent is yet to be determined but Midland currently leads the race with the second-best overall record in the South.

Looking for #70: The Sod Poodles' next win will be their 70th overall of the season, which will guarantee a winning overall record in the club's inaugural campaign.

Down The Stretch We Come: Six games remain in the 2019 inaugural regular season for the Sod Poodles before the Texas League postseason begins.

Scholtens First Seven: In his 19th start with Amarillo, Jesse Scholtens began by recording his first seven outs of the contest all via a strikeout. Overall, he finished with nine total strikeouts, just two short of his career-high 11, over five innings with 10 hits and five runs allowed without a walk surrendered.

Largest Deficit: Monday night's game set the largest deficit the Sod Poodles have faced against Tulsa this season (seven runs). The previous largest was only two runs which came on June 23 at ONEOK Field.

Deep Into Monday: Monday night's contest marked the longest game at HODGETOWN to date. The game one of the series with Tulsa lasted 3:35. The previous longest was 3:30 set on July 22 against Northwest Arkansas.

Men Left Behind: The Sod Poodles left a second-highest 13 runners left on base Monday night. The most left on base for Amarillo in 2019 is 14 marked on May 3 versus Springfield.

Game One Woes: The Sod Poodles fall to a 13-26 record in game ones of a series throughout the 2019 season.

Road Show Over: The Sod Poodles played their final road game of the 2019 regular season on Sunday, capping it off with a win at Arkansas. Amarillo is guaranteed at least one more road trip in the Texas League Division Series.

Bednar's Brilliance: Amarillo reliever David Bednar has now collected 12 straight scoreless outings with his save Sunday at Arkansas. Since the start of June, he has a 2.06 ERA in 26 appearances (35 innings) while striking out 50 batters in that span.

Lucky 7: With Amarillo's seven-run frame on Thursday night, it tied a season-high for runs scored in an inning. It was the second time the Sod Poodles plated seven in an inning. The first time the Sod Poodles accomplished the feat was on April 11 vs. Corpus Christi.

Rain Is a Good Thing: The Sod Poodles played in their first rained shortened game Thursday night in Tulsa. The contest was called following the end of the seventh inning due to rain while the Sod Poodles held a 9-3 lead.

36 so far: HODGETOWN saw it's 36th sellout of the 2019 season in their 60th home game.
