Snappers Shut Down by Lake County

Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, Wisc. - The Beloit Snappers' pitching and defense had eight solid innings tonight. Unfortunately, neither showed up for the first inning, as Lake County scored three runs on two hits, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and an error to propel the Captains to a 4-2 win, Monday night.

Snappers' starter Dustin Driver got in to trouble early with Greg Allen leading off for Lake County with a double off the right field wall. The second batter for the Captains would reach as well after Driver hit Yu-Cheng Chang in the helmet.

Chang had to leave the game and while the runner who replaced him, Dorssys Paulino, was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice, the next four batters would reach base. The Snappers had a chance to escape with only one run reaching when shortstop Yairo Munoz almost turned a double play and caught Claudio Bautista in a rundown at third. Bautista would score and the inning would continue when third baseman Jose Brizuela threw the ball away trying to get the out at home.

Even if the Snappers had limited Lake County to just one run in the first, they still would've been hard pressed to win the game with the way Captains' starting pitcher Sean Brady was pitching. Brady went six innings allowing only four Snappers to reach base (three hits, one walk) and struck out five while keeping the first five Snappers' hitter to a combined 0-13 while he was in.

Kevin Johnson did his best to keep Beloit in the game on the mound, throwing three near perfect innings in relief. Johnson allowed only three hits, all of which were singles, in arguably his best outing of the year.

Recent returnee's to the Snappers, Andy Paz and Justin Higley, did the only early damage for Beloit in the third inning. Paz (DH) blooped a single into right field to set up an RBI double to left field for Higley (RF), but the Captains' pitching staff would allow just two baserunners in the following five innings.

Lake County's fourth and final run crossed the plate in the eighth inning off of Snappers reliever Koby Gauna. Two wild pitches would turn a Bobby Ison fielder's choice into essentially a triple before the Captains' left fielder David Armendariz would drive in his second run with an RBI single.

The Snappers flirted with a comeback in the game's final inning when James Harris led off the ninth with a walk and Trent Gilbert singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Lake Country closer Cameron Hill found his groove before Beloit caused any real trouble however, getting Yairo Munoz on a sac fly, striking out Brizuela, and getting Max Kuhn to pop out to end the game, dropping Beloit's record to 24-34.

The Snappers will have a day off tomorrow to recover from their series loss before heading to Bowling Green to take on the Hot Rods in a three game series.
