Hot Rods Complete Sweep of Clinton in 4-2 Win

June 8, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Clinton, Iowa - Bralin Jackson's first-inning home run gave the Hot Rods the lead, and the Hot Rods pitching staff held on for dear life to finish off the three-game sweep of Clinton, defeating the LumberKings, 4-2, at Ashford University Field Monday evening.

Bowling Green (33-25) finishes its six-game Western Division road trip with a 5-1 record and has started June with a 6-1 mark while riding a three-game winning streak back to the Commonwealth. Clinton (23-35) dropped its 10th consecutive game, the longest losing streak in LumberKings franchise history.

Jackson went yard off Clinton starter Tyler Herb for his third homer of the eyar in the top of the first inning, scoring Thomas Milone after he led off with a single and stole his 13th base, giving Bowling Green a 2-0 lead before Henry Centeno went to the mound. In the same inning, however, a pair of Hot Rod base runners were thrown out on the bases - Riley Unroe got picked off of first after an infield single with Jackson at the plate, and Jace Conrad ended the inning by getting thrown out at second base after a two-out single while Nick Ciuffo was at the plate.

That Hot Rods advantage grew to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, when Ciuffo doubled into the right-field corner to score Conrad, who singled one batter earlier.

Centeno cruised through the first five innings, helped out by two double play groundballs - after notching just one over his first nine starts combined - while Conrad's leaping catch at the left-field fence on Chris Mariscal's two-out drive in the third saved a potential three-run home run.

But, in the sixth, Clinton scored for the first time in 17 innings, plating a pair of runs on RBI doubles from Chantz Mack and Tayler Zeutenhorst, cutting the Hot Rods lead to 3-2. Following a two-out walk to Estarlyn Morales, Edgar Gomez came in from the bullpen and halted the LumberKings rally by fanning Wayne Taylor to end the inning.

Centeno (4-2) still managed to win for the third time in four starts, scattering six hits over 5.2 innings of work, but struggled with command by walking four and striking out only two. Gomez lasted 1.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair as well while stranding three runners on base.

Still up by that one run in the top of the ninth inning, Cristian Toribio slammed a one-out triple into right-centerfield, setting the table for Milone, who smacked a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Toribio, giving Bowling Green a 4-2 cushion.

Eastern Division All-Star Hunter Wood, who came into the game in the eighth inning, worked around a leadoff walk in that frame and a two-out hit-by-pitch against Luis Caballero in the ninth to retire Arby Fields on a groundout to complete the sweep and earn his fourth save of the season. In all, Clinton went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position over the last three innings.

Bowling Green hitters enjoyed seeing Herb (2-3), getting to him for 10 hits over 6.1 innings.

Conrad busted out of a 4-for-36 slump by posting a perfect 4-for-4 line with a run scored, while Milone and Ciuffo registered two hits each as part of Bowling Green's 12-hit attack.

After a league-wide off day on Tuesday, the Hot Rods host a six-game homestand beginning Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. CDT, when the Beloit Snappers (Athletics) come to Bowling Green Ballpark for a three-game set. All-Star right-hander Chris Pike (6-1, 2.72) gets the ball in the opener against Beloit right-hander Heath Fillmyer (0-6, 7.20).
