April 12, 2005 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Brett Smith pitched eight shutout innings and the Charleston RiverDogs exploded for a season high in runs and hits en route to an 8-0 victory over the Columbus Catfish Tuesday night at Riley Park.

Smith (1-0) gave up four hits and one walk, striking out five in picking up his first win of the season. He allowed only two runners to reach scoring position, Travis Denker and Lucas May both in the second inning. Brad Blackwell pitched a scoreless ninth to complete the RiverDogs' first shutout victory of the season.

Marcus Vechionacci went 3-4 with four runs scored to pace a 12-hit offensive attack, while Ben Jones drove in three runs for the second straight night, including his first home run of the season in the third inning. The RiverDogs tagged Catfish starter Landestoy Troncoso (0-1) for seven hits and five runs in four innings, then added three more tallies against reliever Phil Sobkow.

Cody Ehlers started the scoring with an RBI single in the first off Troncoso, then Jones followed with a ground out that scored Vechionacci to make it 2-0. Jones' two-run blast to right field capped a three-run third inning, while Tim Battle homered in the sixth as part of another two-run rally.

Charleston won for the second consecutive night in the series and improved to 4-2 on the season, while Columbus dropped its fourth in five games this season. The two teams conclude the three-game set Wednesday morning at 10:35 am on Charleston County Educational Day at Riley Park.
