April 12, 2005 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)âDelmarva's C.J. Smith drove home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning Tuesday, one of his three singles on the night, as the Shorebirds slipped by the Captains 2-1 on a chilly night at Classic Park.
Smith, 6-4, 215-pound first baseman, went 3-4 on the night. His single off T.J. Burton (0-1) in the ninth chased home Quincy Ascencion to snap a 1-1 tie.
The Shorebirds (4-2) tied the game in the eighth off Burton when Smith singled and scored on an error by shortstop Brian Finegan.
The Delmarva comeback spoiled a masterful performance by Captains starter Justin Hoyman. Hoyman, making his Classic Park debut, worked seven innings aloowing just three hits and no runs. He walked tow and struck out two and left with a 1-0 lead. Hoyman retired the side in order four times.
The Captains (4-2) took the lead in the second inning on a solo homer by Wyatt Toregas off Delmarva starter Jim Tiller. It was the second of the year for Toregas.
The teams braved a game-time temperature of 42 degrees. A crowd of 2,798 was offered a free ticket to Wednesday's game as a thank-you for staying the entire game on Tuesday.
Captains third baseman Argenis Reyes entered Tuesday's game as the SAL's leading hitter at .476. He went 1-4 to extend his hitting streak to six games.
The Captains and Shorebirds will wrap-up their series on Wednesday evening at 6:35 (WELW AM 1330).
