SAVANNAH, Ga - Solid pitching from young southpaw Ricardo Morales,and timely hitting by his teammates, proved to be the winning combination for Savannah, as the Gnats (3-1) downed Greenville (2-2), 6-1 Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Gnats swarmed the field. Bomber reliever Modesto Ozuna walked the bases loaded setting the table for Savannah first baseman Steve Mortimer's screaming two-run double to right. Designated hitter Luke Montz and Mortimer joined their mates in the dugout, chased home when catcher Devin Ivany lined a double to left putting Savannah up 6-0.
In his Savannah debut, Morales pieced together the second impressive Savannah start in as many nights. Over six innings of shutout baseball, Morales surrendered only three hits while striking out four. Righties Warmar Gomez and Somer Gonzalez provided three solid innings of relief, surrendering only one run.
The Gnats and the Bombers match up in game two of the three-game series, Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Historic Grayson Stadium.
