Charleston RiverDogs Score Early to Top Catfish 8-0

CHARLESTON, SC---Coming off an tough 7-6 loss on Monday, the Columbus Catfish were unable to stop the surging Charleston RiverDogs tonight at Riley Ballpark in Charleston, as the RiverDogs beat the Catfish by a 8-0 final. RHP Landestoy Troncoso was tagged with the loss for Columbus, giving up the five runs on seven hits in four innings. Charleston RHP Brett Smith turned in an outstanding performance, holding the Catfish scoreless and limiting the Catfish to just four hits in eight innings of work. The Catfish close out the series and will try to break a three-game early season skid tomorrow with a 10:35 AM contest against the RiverDogs.

Charleston scored two in the first inning against Troncoso on an RBI single by Cody Ehlers and an RBI groundout by Ben Jones. Jones drove home two more runs in the third inning with a homerun to right field. Catfish Manager Travis Barbary disputed the call on the field with home plate umpire Brett Robson, who was not persuaded to change the call. Charleston scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning in the 8-0 win.

The Catfish had four singles tonight and their only extra base hit was a two-out double in the ninth inning by RF James Peterson. Tomorrow the Catfish send RHP Jesus Castillo (0-1, 15.43 ERA, 1 G) to the hill, replacing LHP Scott Elbert in the rotation as Elbert is on the seven-day DL. Castillo faces RHP Phillip Hughes (0-0, 3.86 ERA, 1 GS) at 10:35 AM in Charleston.

The Catfish come home at the conclusion of tomorrow's game and open the first homestand of the year with Opening Night on Thursday, April 14th against the Rome Braves at 6:00 PM.
