Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Shaky relief work and mistakes in the field cost Savannah its second loss of the season Tuesday night. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Gnats jumped ahead after DH Luke Montz blasted his second home run in as many nights. Montz's shot flew an estimated 395 feet, landing on an adjacent road outside the left field wall.

Greenville surged back ahead in the fifth, picking up three runs off Gnats reliever Tom Wilson. Bomber shortstop Christian Lara led off the inning by reaching first on an error by shortstop Ian Desmond, one of three miscues by Savannah on the evening. After three straight hits by Greenville batsmen the Gnats found themselves on the short side of a 5-2 score.

Not to be outdone, the home nine answered with a three spot in the bottom half of the frame. Catcher Devin Ivany, left fielder Marvin Lowrance and right fielder Reggie Pitzpatrick crossed the plate evening the tally at five.

In the top of the ninth, Greenville center fielder Matt Van Der Bosch led off with a single. He advanced to second on a ground out and scored when Savannah second baseman Trey Webb threw the ball past first baseman Steve Mortimer to close the scoring at 6-5.

The Gnats (3-2) and the Bombers (3-2) play the rubber match of the series Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. at Historic Grayson Stadium. Veteran major league hurler Wade Miller starts for Greenville and southpaw Jon Felfoldi toes the rubber for Savannah. Tickets are available by calling the Gnats box office at 912-351-9150, or by stopping by the team's Grayson Stadium offices.
