
Smith Named to Canadian Youth Olympic Team

SPOKANE, Wash. - As announced by Hockey Canada on Thursday, Spokane Chiefs defenseman Ty Smith has been selected to Team Canada for the upcoming 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games, Feb. 12-21 in Lillehammer, Norway. Smith, who made his WHL debut with the Chiefs on Wednesday night, was one of 17 players - eight of them WHL prospects - named to the roster.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for the group of players chosen to represent Canada to compete at the highest level in international competition," Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada's vice-president of hockey operations and national teams, said in a press release. "This event is a unique experience unlike any other, and will be something that our athletes learn from and remember for a lifetime."
The roster was selected from 2000-born players from all regions of Canada. The men's hockey tournament at the Games will feature five countries - Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia and the United States - with a round-robin format before a single-elimination tournament. Canada opens versus Russia on Feb. 13.

Smith made his WHL debut as an affiliate player in the Chiefs' 9-2 win over Saskatoon on Wednesday night, recording two assists and a +4 rating. He will remain with the Chiefs for Friday night's game versus Portland before returning to his regular Lloydminster Bandit Pipeline Bobcats of the Alberta 'AAA' Midget Hockey League on Saturday.
