Oil Kings Fall 3-1 to Raiders

January 14, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

The Edmonton Oil Kings just didn't seem to have that extra gear tonight and the Prince Albert Raiders scored three goals in the second period walking out of Rexall Place with a 3-1 win.

The Oil Kings fired 32 shots on net at Raider goaltender Rylan Parenteau and only Colton Kehler's 9th goal got behind him dropping the club's record to 17-21-5-0. Special teams weren't clicking tonight as Edmonton went 0/4 with the extra man.

"Our special teams for sure (was the shortfall). We couldn't really get any traction on our powerplay," said Kehler. "Nights like that are going to happen. We put a lot of emphasis on our special teams and just tonight we weren't executing."

The Raiders' Jordan Tkatch and Reid Gardiner led the way with a goal and two assists each and Simon Stransky also had a goal and assist.

Kehler had the lone goal assisted by Tyler Robertson. Aaron Irving had a team-leading five shots on net for the Oil Kings as every single player except Kobe Mohr registered at least one shot. Payton Lee (7-10-2-1) stopped 16 of 19 shots he faced in the loss.

Defenceman Dysin Mayo felt the team just wasn't forceful enough on the powerplay.

"I think we are getting too complacent maybe," said Mayo. "The work ethic isn't there on the powerplay and that's what killed us tonight."

The Oil Kings have a busy weekend ahead of them as they travel to Medicine Hat Friday for a 7:30 pm game and then play the next night in Lethbridge at 6:00 pm. They return home for a special 6:00 pm game vs the Kamloops Blazers Sunday night.
