Game Story
A brisk first period saw the Pats get out to an early 5-0 advantage on the shot count before the Winterhawks were able to finally test Jordan Hollett. The visitors kept up their momentum from Everett as Adam Brooks opened the scoring with 6:12 left in the frame. Adam Berg leaped into the air, gloved down the puck and kicked it over to Brooks who slid a shot through the wickets of Adin Hill. Jordan Hollett wasn't overly busy in the first, but had to be sharp on a pair of Hawks chances in tight with the period reaching its late stages. The Pats carried their 1-0 advantage into the dressing room.
The second frame didn't see any goals, though the Pats did come close late. Sam Steel found the back of the net, but his stick was well over the crossbar when he tipped the Sergey Zborovskiy shot. Another opportunity came when Rykr Cole took a centering feed and jammed the puck past Hill, but hit the post. Fans still had something to cheer about as a Lane Zablocki and Skyler McKenzie tilt brought the Coliseum to its feet. A late exchange between the clubs sent the Winterhawks to the powerplay to start the third period with the Pats still ahead by a 1-0 count.
The Pats penalty kill turned away the early man advantage, but the Winterhawks tied the game shortly after the conclusion of the powerplay. Dominic Turgeon snagged the puck in the left faceoff circle and rifled a low shot past Hollett at 3:47. Portland took its first lead of the game when Rihards Bukarts set up a Keoni Texiera one-timer which he pounded to the twine just 3:34 after Turgeon's tying marker. Connor Hobbs upped the physical game late in the frame when he obliterated Rodrigo Abols in the Pats' slot, then took care of business, dropping the gloves when Alex Schoenborn challenged the Pats defender. The Blue and White nearly tied the game when Austin Wagner tipped a shot in front of Hill ahead of the final minute, but the Hawks neminder came up with the stop. The save lead to two empty net goals by Skyler McKenzie as Portland skated to the 4-1 win.
