Slugfest Sees Loons Fall to Lansing

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Loons kept pace with the Lansing Lugnuts for most of what was a back-and-forth series finale, but could not match Lansing's offensive production down the stretch.

Three runs during the top of the 6th inning powered the Lugnuts to a 9-6 victory over Great Lakes on Monday at Dow Diamond.

The Loons (47-46) head to South Bend for a three-game series against the Cubs before returning to Dow Diamond this weekend.

"It's always good to get the series win (against Lansing)," said Loons manager Luis Matos. "I needed to change the lineup a little bit because we weren't scoring as much. During the second half, the pitching has not been as good."

Instead of grabbing an early lead like they had done a day earlier, the Loons fell behind during the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Lansing (53-42) first baseman Ryan McBroom started the rally with a leadoff double. He was hit home by right fielder Boomer Collins and scored Lansing's first run. After outfielder Josh Almonte reached base on a single, Lugnuts catcher Juan Kelly blasted a three-run home run over the wall to increase his team's early lead to 4-0.

Great Lakes grabbed two of the runs back during the bottom half of the frame.

Catcher Julian Leon, who had two RBI in yesterday's game, walked to start the inning. After a day off on Sunday, outfielder Alex Santana plated Leon on an RBI double. Kyle Garlick brought Santana home on a double of his own, cutting the lead in half 4-2.

After Lansing scored another unearned run during the top of the 4th inning, Great Lakes answered with two more runs.

Leon and Santana each worked walks before first baseman Justin Chigbogu notched an opposite-field bloop single scoring Leon. Matt Beaty, who launched a three-run bomb `on Sunday, earned the Loons another run on a fly out to left field, making it 5-4 Lugnuts.

Lansing plated three more runs during the top of the 5th inning to bulk the lead up to 8-4. Lansing starter Jesus Tinoco (2-5) earned the win while Loons starter Matt Shelton (1-2) took the loss.

The Loons head to Indiana for a three-game midweek series against the South Bend Cubs next. The club returns to Dow Diamond this weekend for three-game set vs. the Lake County Captains.
