West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - Three West Michigan Whitecaps pitchers combined for a shutout as they defeated the South Bend Cubs 4-0 Monday at Four Winds Field.
The Whitecaps took an early lead when Rashad Brown and Ross Kivett laid down perfect bunts to each drive in a run and take a 2-0 lead. The score stayed the same until the eighth, when West Michigan added a pair of insurance runs highlighted by Christin Stewart's RBI-single to increase the 'Caps lead to 4-0.
Reliever Trey Teakell (2-0) matched a Whitecaps season-high of pitching four innings in relief, and did so without allowing a run on only two base hits to earn his second win in as many appearances. Prior to Teakell's work, starter Fernando Perez scattered six hits over four scoreless innings before leaving with an injury in the fifth. Zach Hedges (5-6) allowed all four West Michigan runs in 7.1 innings in taking his sixth loss of 2015. Stewart led the Whitecaps with three hits, and finished the series against South Bend 7-for-13 with a double, homerun and four RBI. The Whitecaps record improves to 16-8 in the season's second half, bringing their overall record to 49-44. South Bend falls to 13-12 this half, with a combined record of 42-50.
