Lansing Lugnuts News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (11-14, 53-42) swamped knuckleballer Matt Shelton and the Great Lakes Loons (9-16, 48-45) in a 9-6 win Monday at Dow Diamond.

Shelton (Loss, 1-2) gave up a three-run home run to Juan Kelly in a four-run second, helping the Lugnuts score the game's first runs for the first time in seven games.

Lansing had scored a combined seven runs in their previous three games before today's outburst.

Jesus Tinoco (Win, 2-5) protected the early lead, giving up four runs and striking out three over five innings.

Colton Turner took over for the next two innings and gave up two runs, but worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to guard Lansing's edge.

After surrendering an RBI single to Nick Dean, Turner struck out Mike Ahmed and coaxed an inning-ending pop out by Kelvin Ramos.

Jose Fernandez took over and pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to lock down his team-leading eighth save. The closer gave up two hits, but stranded a runner on first in both frames.

After the fifth, the Lansing offense went dry until the ninth, when Alex Maldonado took a J.D. Underwood fastball deep to left field for a solo home run. Maldonado's first home run of the season gave the Lugs a three-run edge.

Kelly's second-inning blast was his second home run of the season, and second home run against the Loons. Kelly homered against Great Lakes in Lansing's 15-inning win July 9th.

Lansing's homestand begins Tuesday against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7:05 p.m. and is a Dollar Deal Day, with one-dollar hot dogs, pepsi products, and ice cream sandwiches. Right-hander Conor Fisk (0-2, 8.00) gets his turn in the rotation against Bowling Green standout Yonny Chirinos (2-0, 0.00), making his first start against Lansing.

The six-game homestand runs through July 26 with three-game sets against the Bowling Green Hot Rods and Dayton Dragons. For more information, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
