Slugfest Ends in 15-12 Tourists Defeat

Asheville, NC--Saturday night at McCormick Field was a showcase of the two best offensive teams in the South Atlantic League. The Asheville Tourists, who rank first with a .291 team batting average, went toe to toe with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, who rank second with a .283 batting average. In the end, it was Greensboro who finished on top with a 15-12 win.

The Grasshoppers pounded out 19 hits while the Tourists finished with 17. Of the 18 half innings played, only three went without a run. Greensboro scored two runs in each of the first three innings then added three more in the fourth. After failing to score in the fifth and the seventh while plating one in the sixth and eighth; they left no doubt with a four-run ninth.

The Tourists were right there every step of the way. Asheville scored one run in each of the first two innings, added three in the third, and plated one more in the fourth. After failing to score in the fifth, the home team notched one in the sixth, two more in the seventh, and tied up the score 11-11 on Jordan Patterson's two-run homer in the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, the Grasshoppers strung together five straight singles and added a sacrifice fly to kick the lead back out to four. The Tourists managed one in the bottom of the ninth.

Leading the way for Asheville was David Dahl. He finished 4-for-6 with three doubles. Max White went 4-for-5 and Jordan Patterson added a three hit performance. Correlle Prime also left the yard with a solo shot to begin the seventh.

The Grasshoppers were evenly distributed throughout the order. Eight of their nine hitters tallied multi-hit games and Austin Dean drove in a game high five runs.

The same two teams are back on the field for game three on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch is at 2:05pm.
