Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (8-2, 52-28) took down the Delmarva Shorebirds (4-6, 42-37) in 12 innings Saturday night 6-5 at Municipal Stadium. It is the fourth straight one-run win for Hagerstown, and the Suns are now 6-1 in extra-inning games this season.
Left fielder Isaac Ballou scored the winning run for Hagerstown. He laced a two-out triple down the right field line to get aboard in the 12th. The Shorebirds then decided to intentionally walk DH Carlos Lopez to set up a lefty-lefty match-up with 3B Drew Ward at the plate. Ward made Delmarva pay by hitting a line drive single to left, bringing home Ballou to win the game.
The Suns were able to come back from a 5-4 deficit and tie the game in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by 1B Jimmy Yezzo. Hagerstown had been up 4-1, but the Shorebirds plated four in the seventh to take a one-run lead. Delmarva sent nine batters to the plate in that seventh inning, and scored the four runs on five hits and one costly error, which led to three of the four runs being unearned.
The Suns had a four run inning of their own in the third to take their 4-1 advantage. Yezzo led off the third by getting hit by a pitch. Catcher Craig Manuel then sent a single to right, and RF Narciso Mesa drove both runners in with a double to left, making it 2-1. Mesa wound up scoring on a single by Ballou, and a sacrifice fly by Lopez drove in the final run of the frame.
Delmarva had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by LF Lucas Herbst. It was the second time in as many games that the Shorebirds had gotten on the board first, and Delmarva ended up losing both contests.
LHP Jake Walsh (1-2) got the win for Hagerstown. He pitched the final three innings for the Suns and did not allow a batter to reach base, while striking out five. LHP Donnie Hart (0-2) suffered the loss for the Shorebirds. He threw 2.2 innings, giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out two. LHP Brett Mooneyham started for Hagerstown and went five innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out three.
These two teams continue their four-game series at Municipal Stadium on Sunday June 29. The Suns will send LHP Hector Silvestre (3-5) to the mound for his 14th start and appearance of the year. He will square off against RHP Hunter Harvey (4-4) for the Shorebirds. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm.
