Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds lost in extra innings to the Hagerstown Suns for their fifth straight defeat. A walkoff RBI single by Drew Ward sunk Delmarva in the 12th inning on Saturday night. The Shorebirds (42-37, 4-6) have now lost five consecutive games by a total margin of six runs.
Luis Gonzalez got off to a strong start, but his outing hit a wall in the third inning. After retiring the first six batters he faced, the Shorebirds' starter allowed a hit by pitch and single to start the third inning. Narciso Mesa ripped a two-run double down the third base line to give the Suns a 2-1 lead. In total, Hagerstown scored four runs in the third inning as nine batters came to the plate.
Delmarva benefitted from some mistakes to take a lead in the seventh. Conor Bierfeldt demolished a solo home run to deep left field, his eighth long ball of the season. Anthony Caronia and Lucas Herbst then reached on two-out singles. Third baseman Drew Ward booted a hard hit grounder from Jeff Kemp, and both runners scored on the error to tie the game. Kemp later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Hagerstown tied it back up with a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Yezzo in the eighth inning. The Suns just missed taking a lead on a throwing error by Dylan Rheault. After a bunt by Narciso Mesa, Craig Manuel attempted to score after a wild throw. Herbst backed up the play in right field, tossing out Manuel at the plate to preserve a 5-5 tie.
The Suns' bullpen gave Hagerstown plenty of chances to win. Justin Thomas and Jake Walsh combined to retire 16 batters in a row from the 7th to the 12th inning. The Suns broke through in the bottom of the 12th after Isaac Ballou's two-out triple set up the game-winner. After an intentional walk to Carlos Lopez, Drew Ward sliced a walkoff RBI single to give the Suns a 6-5 victory.
The Shorebirds and Suns will face off on Sunday evening for game three. Right-hander Hunter Harvey (4-4, 2.98) will start for Delmarva against left-hander Hector Silvestre (3-5, 4.87). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm at Municipal Stadium.
