Hagerstown Suns News Release

About yesterday... The Hagerstown Suns (7-2, 51-28) won their third consecutive one-run game on Friday night, downing the Delmarva Shorebirds (4-5, 42-36) by a final score of 3-2. The Suns are now 13-10 in one-run games this season.

Both teams got off to a fast start offensively. Delmarva put up a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by DH Chance Sisco. Suns starting RHP Jake Johansen had walked the bases loaded with one out when Sisco came to the plate. Third baseman Drew Dosh also attempted to score on the hit by Sisco, but he was gunned down by LF Isaac Ballou at the plate.

Hagerstown knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Shortstop Wilmer Difo hit a one-out infield single to short. Two batters later catcher Spencer Kieboom doubled to right to drive in Difo and tie the game.

The Suns then took their first lead of the game in the third. Back-to-back singles by RF Narciso Mesa and CF Rafael Bautista began the inning, and a fielding error by RF Lucast Herbst allowed both runners to advance into scoring position with no one out. That made it easy for Mesa to trot home on a groundout to short, putting Hagerstown ahead 2-1.

The Shorebirds responded with a run in the top of the fourth. Center fielder Gregory Lorenzo singled with two outs. A fielding error by Bautista on a ball hit to center field by Herbst allowed Lorenzo to score all the way from first and make it 2-2.

The next half inning the Suns again took the lead, and this time for good. Kieboom smacked another double to begin the frame, and moved to third on a groundout to second. A line drive single by Jimmy Yezzo then brought Kieboom home to set what turned out to be the final score.

RHP Ryan Ullmann (3-0) pitched 3.1 innings in relief for Hagerstown to earn the win. He allowed two hits and struck out one without getting charged for a run. LHP David Napoli threw the final two innings for the Suns to earn his second save in as many chances this season. Starting RHP Sebastian Vader (8-4) suffered the loss for Delmarva. He went seven innings, surrendering three earned runs on eight hits while striking out three.

On the Mound... LHP Brett Mooneyham will be heading to the hill this evening for the Suns. He is making his second start and appearance this season with Hagerstown. His first start came on June 23 at home against Lexington. In that outing he went four innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out five. Mooneyham began the season with high-A Potomac, going 2-4 with a 7.36 ERA in 10 games (seven starts). In 33.0 inning with the Nationals he allowed 33 runs (27 earned) on 35 hits including two homers. He walked 35 and struck out 18. Mooneyham also pitched two games with short-season Auburn this year before joining the Suns roster. Tonight he goes up against LHP Luis Gonzalez for the Shorebirds. Gonzalez is making his seventh start and eighth appearance this year. He last threw on June 22 at home against Lexington, pitching 5.2 innings and surrendering one earned run on three hits while walking three and striking out six. Gonzalez has not given up more than two earned runs in an appearance all season. This is his first time facing the Suns this year. On the road Gonzalez is 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in three starts. Overall this season he has tossed 31.0 innings, allowing nine runs (six earned) on 22 hits. He has walked 11 and has struck out 29.

The Deal with Delmarva... The Suns and Shorebirds are playing the 14th of 23 games against each other this season and the eighth of 10 that will take place in Hagerstown. The Suns are 7-6 against Delmarva this year, including a 6-1 record against the Shorebirds at Municipal Stadium. The Shorebirds are currently 42-36 overall and 4-5 in the second half, good for sixth place in the Northern Division second half standings. Delmarva is currently fifth in team batting with a .268 average and third in pitching with a team ERA of 3.29.

One-run wonders... The Suns have won each of their last three games by one run, improving Hagerstown's record in one-run games this season to 13-10.
