South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN - After four innings on Friday night at Four Winds Field, the South Bend Cubs led the Beloit Sky Carp 6-3. The middle innings were a transition period between the two clubs, as Beloit and South Bend were exchanging runs at a high rate back and forth. As Beloit got themselves back in the game, they scored seven runs from the 5th inning-on to take the game 10-8.

Beloit has now won back-to-back ballgames to lead the series three games to one. If South Bend wants a series split, they'll have to win both tomorrow and Sunday.

Friday night started positively again for the Cubs with big lefty Luke Little taking the hill. In his first start of the year at Quad Cities, Little worked four no-hit and shutout innings. In the game versus Beloit, Little posted a zero in the top of the 1st, and the Cubs bats immediately to work.

Haydn McGeary has been on a terror at the plate, and that continued with his second home run in as many days in the 1st against Beloit starter Alex Williams. The Sky Carp came right back, though with a singular run in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

The Cubs had that big bottom of the 4th where two of the runs came in on a Yohendrick Pinango barreled single. In all, three runs came home and it was a 6-3 game.

Beloit would not stay down for long as they answered right back with two in the top of the 5th to get the game back within a run.

The big blows by the Sky Carp came starting in the 8th as Ynmanol Marinez was called off the bench to pinch hit. The big right handed batter roped a double up the third base line to give Beloit their first lead.

In the 9th, Yiddi Cappe hammered a two run home run to put the Sky Carp up by three. The Cubs needed a comeback to get back in the game. Casey Opitz started the frame with a double. He was brought home thanks to Scott McKeon on an RBI-single. McKeon had his best game of 2022 so far with three hits and an RBI.

With the loss, the Cubs fall to 4-3 and will try and salvage the series Saturday afternoon with a special first pitch time of 4:05 PM. Right-hander Brandon Birdsell will be on the mound for South Bend.
