Skubal K's 10 as SeaWolves Shut out Ponies 3-0

The SeaWolves notched their 14th shutout win of the season with a 3-0 victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in game two of Wednesday night's doubleheader at NYSEG Stadium.

Erie starter Tarik Skubal ran into trouble in the first inning as the Rumble Ponies loaded the bases on a Gavin Cecchini base hit and walks by Barrett Barnes and Austin Bossart. Skubal struck out Andres Gimenez to get out of the frame, keeping the Ponies off the board.

The 'Wolves took the lead in the second against Binghamton starter Joseph Shaw. Kody Eaves beat the shift by reaching on a one-out bunt single. Josh Lester and Sergio Alcantara followed with back-to-back walks, loading the bases for Joey Morgan. Morgan grounded out to the third baseman, scoring Eaves for a 1-0 lead. Derek Hill then singled home a pair to give the 'Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Skubal faced the minimum in the second and third innings with three more strikeouts, taking his total to six through the first three. He ran into trouble again in the fourth as the Ponies again loaded the bases with one out. He punched out Mike Paez and Quinn Brodey to strand the sacks full.

In the last of the fifth, Skubal began by striking out Cecchini for his 10th strikeout of the game. He induced a groundout from Jason Krizan but walked back-to-back hitters and was lifted. Drew Carlton came on to retire the final out of the inning, keeping Binghamton scoreless.

Carlton (2-3) would pick up the win as he retired all seven batters he faced over 2.1 innings of work.

Shaw (1-4) took the loss for Binghamton allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

Skubal took the no-decision over 4.2 scoreless innings. He allowed three hits with six walks while striking out 10. It was the fourth time in five starts where Skubal struck out at least 10 hitters.

The SeaWolves go for the series win on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Anthony Castro (4-2, 4.22 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Mickey Jannis (5-2, 3.82 ERA).
