Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
After being swept by the Sioux Falls Pheasants over the weekend, the Winnipeg Goldeyes found out Monday night that things aren't any more friendly a couple miles south in Sioux City.
The Goldeyes (41-27) watched an early 2-0 lead evaporate Monday night and lost 6-2 to the Sioux City Explorers (33-35) in front of 891 fans at Lewis and Clark Park. The loss pushes Winnipeg's losing streak to four games.
Winnipeg scored once in the first and third innings, but Sioux City retaliated with two in the bottom of the third to tie the game and tallied three more in the sixth to take command of the game. Wally Backman Jr. hit a solo home run in the seventh in for the Xs last run of the game.
Jon Weber and Brian Myrow each drove in a run for Winnipeg, while Kody Kaiser extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a pair of hits.
Goldeyes starter Luis Villarreal lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs - four of which were earned - and striking out five. He takes his second loss of the season. Ty Marotz grabbed the win for Sioux City, while Eddie Delacruz tossed two and two-thirds innings for the save.
The good news for Winnipeg is that the St. Paul Saints also lost Monday, leaving the Goldeyes' two-game cushion atop the North Division intact.
Winnipeg and Sioux City play the middle game of the series Tuesday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and all the action can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290 with Paul Edmonds, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m.
