American Association Game Recaps
July 25, 2011 - American Association (AA) News Release
Kansas City 4, St. Paul 3
The T-Bones added a seemingly innocuous fourth run in the top of the ninth, going ahead 4-0 on St. Paul. That run, however, turned out to be key when St. Paul went on a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning. The Saints picked up three straight doubles to score three runs and put the tying run on second. But a Steve Mays foul flyout to first ended the threat and secured Kansas City's one-run win. The T-Bones scored their four runs on only six hits, with leadoff 2B Jimmy Mojica the only Kansas City batsman with more than one hit, going 2-for-5. Starting T-Bones pitcher Trent Lare now sits at 2-0 with Kansas City since coming over from Wichita after going seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just three hits.
Sioux Falls 5, Gary SouthShore 4
Pheasants 3B Reggie Abercrombie went 3-for-5 with a double, and Sioux Falls used middle-inning runs to take a 5-4 win over Gary SouthShore on Monday. The RailCats led by counts of 2-0 and 3-2. But two fifth-inning runs put Sioux Falls on top for good, with a seventh-frame score adding a soon-to-be necessary insurance run for the Pheasants. Abercrombie kicked off the scoring in the fifth with an RBI double that plated 3B Trevor Lawhorn. Sioux Falls' fifth run came thanks to a Chris Carrara error that allowed DH Mark Shorey to score from second. Sioux Falls starting pitcher Chris Salberg earned the win, striking out seven RailCats batters in six innings of work and allowing three runs on six hits. Carrara singled in a run in the second to put the RailCats up, 2-0, Carrara's only hit of the night.
Lincoln 10, El Paso 4
Leading El Paso 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Saltdogs put up five runs in the frame to put to rest most any doubt of which team would come out on top. The 10-4 lead they built turned out to be the final score in their win over the Diablos. Lincoln picked up only three hits in the five-run inning, but took advantage of some costly mistakes from the El Paso pitching staff. Wild pitches from relievers Josh Grady and Adam Rowe advanced runners and put runs on the board for the Saltdogs. Lincoln starting pitcher Alessandro Meastri earned the win for the home club, throwing six and a third innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. The victory was Meastri's sixth of the season, pulling him up to .500 on the year.
Sioux City 6, Winnipeg 2
Back-to-back doubles from Sioux City DH Brett Flowers and SS Ryan Priddy gave the Explorers their first lead of the game over Winnipeg, who had been on top or tied since a one-run first. Priddy went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, one of three Sioux City players with two hits. Explorers starting pitcher Ty Marotz threw six and a third innings and allowed two runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts, staying in the game long enough to pick up his fifth win of the year. The Goldeyes went on top 1-0 in the first on a Jon Weber double and doubled their lead in the third thanks to a Brian Myrow two-bagger. The run-scoring doubles were Weber and Myrow's only hits of the night.
Wichita 8, Fargo-Moorhead 1
The visiting Wingnuts kicked things off in big-time fashion against Fargo-Moorhead, going up 2-0 in the first inning on a Brent Clevlen two-run homer. From that point on, Wichita never looked back, leading by as many as eight runs and beating the RedHawks, 8-1. Batting one spot ahead of Clevlen in the Wichita lineup, Wingnuts SS Josh Horn went 3-for-4 with three runs and batted in two, leading or co-leading the game in hits, runs and RBI. Starting Wingnuts pitcher Junior Guerra threw a masterful seven innings, allowing only one run on two hits with four strikeouts. Guerra's ERA dropped to 3.89 after his sixth win of the year. Fargo-Moorhead's only run came in the seventh inning when 3B C.J. Rutherford scored on a Guerra wild pitch.
Fort Worth vs. Amarillo (Postponed - Rain)
The game between Fort Worth and Amarillo was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 6:05 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
