Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats will just have to start another winning streak as their bid for a franchise-best ten consecutive wins fell short in a 5-4 loss to the Sioux Falls Pheasants Monday.

The RailCats (41-27) jumped out to an early lead tacking on single tallies in the game's first two innings. Second baseman Brad Boyer doubled to right center with two outs in the first and scored a batter later when Cristian Guerrero extended his season best hitting streak to thirteen games with an RBI single. The ‘Cats scored another run after two outs in the second after Brian Kolb singled past the third baseman, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Chris Carrara for a 2-0 lead.

Sioux Falls (32-36) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third off RailCats starter Jack Frawley. Singles by Kevin Carby, Joe Anthonsen and Reggie Abercrombie loaded the bases for the Pheasants. American Association home run leader Brandon Sing smacked a two-RBI single to center to knot the game at two runs apiece.

The RailCats took the lead again in the fourth grabbing a 3-2 advantage. Mike Valadez led off the frame with a double and Kyle Haines earned his way on base with a five pitch walk. Mike Rohde grounded into a fielder's choice and moved to second on an error by the shortstop Anthonsen with Valadez also coming around to score on the play.

Once again the Pheasants answered right away, this time snatching a 4-3 lead. Abercrombie doubled home Trevor Lawhorn for the first run of the frame and Abercrombie came home on a wild pitch for the second. Sioux Falls picked up what turned out to be a much needed insurance run in the seventh. Mark Shorey doubled and then scored on an error by the RailCats third baseman Carrara to make it a 5-3 ballgame.

The RailCats were determined to keep the streak alive, scratching together one run in the eighth when Adam Klein scored on a double play ball to cut the lead to 5-4. Unfortunately for the home faithful, the RailCats could not come any closer falling for the first time in their last ten games. However, the ‘Cats remain tied for the second-best record in the American Association and first in the Central Division with a four-game cushion over the Wichita Wingnuts.

The same two teams meet again Tuesday at U. S. Steel Yard with LHP Carlos Rivas (4-0, 2.15) of the RailCats scheduled to face RHP Adam Cowert (5-4, 5.16) on another Tenth Anniversary Tuesday. Former major leaguer and RailCats great Wes Chamberlain will be in the house to greet fans and sign autographs.
