Too Little, Too Late as Saints Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short, Lose 4-3

St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (July 25, 2011) - Three straight two out doubles in the ninth inning couldn't help the St. Paul Saints rally to a victory on Monday night, as they fell to the Kansas City T-Bones 4-3 in front of 4,088 fans at Midway Stadium.

Down to their last out, Ronnie Bourquin, Alex Garabedian, and Jonathan Van Every all ripped RBI doubles to put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth. Steve Mays, however, popped out to end the ballgame. Part of the reason the Saints were forced to rally so late was because of T-Bones starting pitcher Trent Lare. The lefty tossed seven shutout frames, yielding just three hits while striking out eight and walking none. Lare entered the game having started just three games all season and a 7.54 ERA.

Kansas City, normally known for their power, got the job done in other ways in the first game of this three game set. A two out double by Jeff Hulett in the second inning plated the first run for the T-Bones. Kansas City added some more in the fourth inning. After a leadoff walk to Rico Washington, Ray Sadler smoked a double to the right-centerfield gap, making it 2-0. With runners on the corners and one out, Huelett dropped down a bunt right back to Saints starting pitcher Alberto Rolon. Rolon fielded and looked Sadler back to third, before throwing to first for the out. As he threw, Sadler broke for home. First baseman Bourquin delivered a good throw to catcher Richard Mercado, but Sadler's hand snuck in before the tag, to make it a 3-0 lead for Kansas City. In the ninth inning, Kansas City added what turned out to be a crucial run. After working a leadoff walk, Kala Ka'aihue stole second. With two outs, Gerardo Caceres drove him in with a double to make it 4-0 before the Saints made their comeback effort in the bottom half of the inning.

Overshadowed by Lare, Rolon was very effective, going 7.0 innings yielding three runs on five hits and three walks, while fanning six T-Bones.

The Saints meet up again with the Kansas City T-Bones on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. as LHP Kyle Carr (1-1, 4.06) will go for the Saints against T-Bones LHP Reid Santos (7-4, 5.04). It's Viva Los Santos night at the Stadium. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330 AM.
