GARY, Ind. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants achieved a new season-best, five-game winning streak with a 5-4 win over the red-hot Gary SouthShore RailCats on Monday. Gary SouthShore, the first-place holders in the Central Division, came in with a nine-game winning streak.

The Pheasants' victory in Gary coupled with a St. Paul Saints loss pulled the Pheasants up to seven games behind in the wild card race.

Pheasants' southpaw Chris Salberg (2-7) started for the first time since June 15 and tossed six quality innings. He scattered six hits and three runs, two earned. He walked two and struck out seven.

The Pheasants twice came back on Gary SouthShore. Down 2-0 in the third inning, Brandon Sing singled with the bases loaded to tie the game.

The RailCats notched an unearned run in the fourth inning, but the Pheasants answered with Reggie Abercrombie's RBI double to deep center to even the game at 3-3. Mark Shorey advanced Abercrombie with a groundout, and Abercrombie scampered home on a wild pitch to take a 4-3 advantage.

Shorey doubled with one out in the seventh inning and then scored on a fielding error by RailCats third baseman Chris Carrara, cushioning the lead at 5-3.

Dan McDaniel pitched a scoreless bottom half of the seventh in relief of Salberg. In the eighth, Gary scratched out an unearned run and put the tying run on with two outs, but Aaron Cotter came in and induced pinch-hitter Toddric Johnson into a groundout. Cotter stayed for the ninth. A potential tying run went aboard on a dropped third strike, but Cotter retired the final two batters for his 10th save of the year.

Abercrombie led the Pheasants with a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored and an RBI. Kevin Carby was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Pheasants improved to 32-36 on the year.

The Pheasants continue the three-game series against Gary SouthShore at 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
