Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today the sixth annual "Salute to Heroes" game, presented by AutoTrader.com, Harris Teeter and The Pita Pit, will take place Saturday, Apr. 9 when the team hosts the Worcester Sharks. Proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships and donations will benefit the families of injured and fallen public service workers as well as the Military Family Lifestyle Charitable Foundation.
Last year's event raised more than $20,000 for the families of the Charlotte Fire Department, Mecklenburg EMS agency, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. More than $100,000 in gifts and cash has been raised since the event's inception in 2005-06.
"The Checkers are proud to partner with AutoTrader.com and the other great partners to host this event for the sixth year," said Checkers senior vice president Aaron Osborne. "There's no better opportunity than this to show off our great sport and give back to those who have given so much with their public service."
The game will feature a special opening ceremony with a performance by the CFD pipe and drum band. During the intermissions, there will also be demonstrations and tributes honoring heroes of past and present.
Following the Checkers game will be the annual "Salute to Heroes" hockey game in which members of CMPD and MCSO will take on CFD and MEDIC. At last season's event, more than 3,500 spectators stayed after the Checkers game to witness a 7-1 CMPD/MCSO team win. CFD/MEDIC, however, leads the overall series 3-2.
Other supporters of "Salute to Heroes" include: American Airlines, BlackFinn, NOVA Office Strategies, Firehouse Subs, The Penguin, Mac's Speed Shop, Diamond Springs, Dixie's Tavern, Connolly's on 5th, Hawthorne's NY Pizza & Bar, Rotary Scholarship Golf Classic and The Charlotte Touchdown Club.
