Dayton Dragons News Release

Grand Chute, WI – The Dayton Dragons (10-17) pulled into Grand Chute, Wisconsin in the wee hours of the morning after an eight hour all night bus trip. Dayton didn't suffer any ill effects from "bus lag" as the Miami Valley's team used a six run fourth inning on route to an 8-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (16-12) in the first game of a four series at Fox Cities Stadium Friday night.

Wisconsin got on the board in the home half of the first on a solo home run off the bat of Asdrubal Cabrera. Cabrera's second HR of the season gave the Timber Rattlers a 1-0 lead and came off Dragons starter Philippe Valiquette (ND). Valiquette's 4.0 innings equaled his longest stint of the season. The left hander surrendered four runs, three of which were earned. The southpaw struck four and walked two.

The Dragons tied the game in the top half of the second inning with a single tally off Jason Snyder (LP, 3-3) Drew Anderson picked up his first of two RBI with an infield single that scored John Purdom to tie the game at 1-1. Anderson would add to his driven in total with another run scoring hit in a six run fourth that broke the game open and gave Dayton a 7-2 lead. Tonys Gutierrez, Mayker Sandoval, Phil Gentry and Paul Janish each added RBI as six Dayton hits and three Wisconsin errors scored a half dozen unearned runs and chased Snyder from the game with one out.

With the five run advantage, Valiquette headed to the bottom of the fourth and ran into difficulty with his old nemesis, the two out walk. With Rob Johnson at third, a free pass with two down to Brent Johnson extended the inning. Jack Arroyo's second RBI single of the game, scored Johnson from third to make it 7-3. Johnson, who stole second during the at bat to Arroyo moved to third on the play and scored when Sandoval couldn't find the handle on the baseball. The error and unearned run made it 7-4 Dayton.

Jon George (WP, 1-0) tossed 4.0 innings of shutout baseball in relief of Valiquette to pick up his first win of the season. The right hander scattered three hits, struck out one and did not allow a walk.

Dayton picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth against T-Rats reliever Ramon Ramirez (ND). Janish picked up his second double of the night and moved to third on a wild pitch. Purdom was hit by a pitch, putting Dragons on the corners with one down. Gutierrez added his second RBI of the night on a fielder's choice and the lead was 8-4.

Jared Sanders (ND) entered the game in a non-save situation and made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. After getting the first two outs in the inning, Sanders missed with 11 consecutive pitches. The right hander walked Oswaldo Navarro, Cabrera and went to three balls no strikes on Yung Chi Chen before finding the zone. After a pair of strikes, Chen lined a shot up the middle which was speared by Janish. The highlight quality grab saved a pair of runs and ended the game, snapping a two game losing streak.

The four game series with Wisconsin continues for the Dragons Saturday afternoon. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live beginning with the pre game show at 1:00 PM. Thursday's first pitch is 2:05 PM with RHP Brad Morenko taking the hill for the Dragons. LHP and Dayton native Casey Abrams gets the start for Timber Rattlers.
