Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL â The Peoria Chiefs fought back twice and held off the Kane County Cougars in the bottom of the 9th to sneak out of Elfstrom Stadium with a 3-2 Midwest League win Friday night. With six more innings without allowing an earned run, Sean Gallagher stretched his streak to 35 innings but took a no-decision for the third time this season.
Chiefs reliever Jerry Blevins had to work hard for his 3rd save of the season. He was greeted by a pinch-hit single from Wes Long to start the 9th. Chalon Tietje laid down a sacrifice bunt that was booted for an error by Peoria first baseman Alberto Garcia putting runners at first and second. After a sac bunt from Kory Wayment moved both runners up 90 feet, Blevins struck out Travis Chapman for the second out. A walk to Nick Blasi loaded the bases, but Blevins got Kevin Melillo to ground out to end the game.
The Chiefs took a 3-2 lead in the 9th inning against Cougars reliever Connor Robertson. Alan Rick drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Aaron Smith. Newcomer Alfred Joseph reached on a single to shallow left and Rick beat the throw to the plate for a 3-2 Chiefs lead.
Gallagher entered the game fresh off a no-hit, 10 strikeout, six inning performance against the same Cougars on Sunday. In the 2nd inning he walked Myron Leslie to start the inning and Raul Padron followed with a single. Tietje bunted to Gallagher but the pitcher threw wild to third in an attempt to get the lead runner. The error allowed Leslie to score the game's first run. Gallagher recovered to get out of the inning and the run was unearned.
The Chiefs tied the game 1-1 on Drew Larsen's RBI single in the 5th inning and took a 2-1 lead on Mike Mallory's double in the 8th. With Mallory at second and Josh Arteaga at third and one out in the 8th, Garcia missed a squeeze bunt attempt and Arteaga was tagged out at the plate keeping the game close. Ed Campusano, who eventually picked up the win, allowed a run in the 8th inning to tie the game 2-2.
Gallagher finished the game with six innings of two-hit ball. He struck out four and walked three on the night while running his streak to 35 innings without allowing an earned run. Gallagher is next scheduled to start on Wednesday in Beloit. The Chiefs franchise record for consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run is 36 set by Mike Tidwell in 1992. Pepsi Player of the Game.
Drew Larsen (3B) âIn just his second game as the Chiefs leadoff man, Larsen reached base in all five plate appearances. He led off the game with a double, was hit by a pitch in the 3rd, singled in a run in the 5th, walked in the 7th and singled in the 9th. Larsen finished 3-for-3 with a RBI.
