Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Derry Hammond blasted a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the eighth inning and the Swing relief corps held Clinton scoreless from there as Quad Cities defeated the Clinton LumberKings, 4-3, on Friday night at Alliant Energy Field. Quad Cities scored three of its four runs with two outs, and won a game while trailing after seven innings for the fourth time this season.
Trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, the Swing (13-14) took the lead with two outs. Mike Ferris drew a four-pitch walk, and relief pitcher Roberto Perez quickly got ahead of Hammond, 1-2. But Perez hung a curveball up in the zone, and Hammond drilled it off the netting beyond the left field wall for a two-run homer. The long ball was Hammond's fifth blast of the season, including his fourth against Clinton LumberKings pitching.
Ool then threw a perfect eighth for his second inning of work to pick up the win, improving his record on the season to 4-0. Mike Sillman retired three of the four batters he saw in the ninth â the only batter to reach did so on the Swing's fourth error of the contest â to pick up his sixth save of the season.
The LumberKings tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Swing answered to take the lead with two runs in the top of the third frame. Wes Swackhamer grounded a one-out triple down the right field line, and then Matt Shepherd bounced out to tie it up. Chris Patrick ripped the first pitch he saw into left field for a single, and then Joe Mather's double into the left field corner plated Patrick to give the Swing a 2-1 lead.
Clinton was able to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning, when Cameron Coughlan walked, stole second, moved up on a sacrifice, and scored on Jim Fasano's second RBI single of the game.
The LumberKings then took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Designated Hitter Adam Fox was hit by a Kevin Ool pitch with one away. He moved to third on another Fasano single, and was promptly knocked home on a Lizahio Baez RBI single.
Mike Parisi picked up a no decision despite a very strong outing for the Swing, going six innings. The righty gave up five hits and walked three, fanning five LumberKings.
For Clinton Perez fell to 2-1, yielding two runs on one hit and three walks.
