Lansing Lugnuts News Release

Lansing, Mich.- Joey Wolfe hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game and David Hicks run-scoring single plated Christian Snavely with the eventual game-winning run as the Lugnuts(17-11) rallied to knock off Southwest Michigan(12-15) by a 4-3 score at Oldsmobile Park.

The Lugnuts took the early lead in the first when Curtis Thigpen doubled with one out and scored on Chip Cannon's RBI single. That slim 1-0 lead held up until the eighth as Kyle Yates and Jarred Lavergne battled each other to pretty much a draw.

Yates(ND) went the longest of any Lansing starter, taking the 1-0 lead into the eighth inning when he ran out of gas. Tommy Nichols was hit by a pitch and took third on a single by Craig Markel. Patrick Breen followed with a single to right to tie the score, but Markrel was thrown out attempting to make it to third. After Fernando Perez walked to chase Yates, Joey McLaughlin(2-1) walked Reid Brignac to load the bases and the Devil Rays took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Patrick Cottrell. John Jaso then ripped a double to left to score Perez and make it 3-1, but Brignac ran through the sign at third and was thrown out at the plate.

Those base running mistakes proved costly. Eric Nielsen walked to start the eighth and after Cannon lined out to third, Wolfe pinch-hit for Luke Hetherington and greeted Devil Ray pitcher Ryan Bitter(0-1) with a two-run homer to right-center to tie the score. Christian Snavely then hit a broken-bat double to right and one batter later, scored on Hicks' single.

Danny Hill pitched the ninth for his eighth save as the Lugnuts captured their 11th comeback win of the year. The series continues tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. as lefty Chi-Hung Cheng goes for Lansing against righthander Andy Sonnastine.
