Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL â The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, announced today that right-handed pitcher Tomas Cabaniel has been sent to extended spring training. Returning to the Cougars active roster this evening, infielder Eddie Kim will join the squad as they face the Peoria Chiefs in game one of a four-game stint at 7:00 p.m.
Kim joins the Cougars for the second consecutive season after being picked up by the A's in the 4th round of the 2003 June Draft. A former James Madison University attendee, Kim commenced his professional career that season with Vancouver, producing a .305 batting average with 73 hits and 39 RBI. Working his first full professional season in 2004, the first baseman drove in 71 fellow Cougars and scored 42 runs while yielding a .254 average in 113 games played.
Prior to his departure, Cabaniel appeared in seven games for the Cougars, tossing 7.2 innings and fanning seven opponents at the plate. The Venezuela native is in his sixth season with the A's organization, playing as high as double-A with the Midland RockHounds in 2003. Last year, the righty split the season between the Modesto A's (High-A, California) and the Vancouver Canadians (Short-A, Northwest), pitching a combined 130.1 innings with 102 strikeouts. Oakland signed Cabaniel as a non-drafted free agent on May 19, 2000.
An updated roster is attached to this release.
