Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 5, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (11-15) overcame and early 5-0 deficit and gave away a late 10-7 lead, before pulling out an 11-10 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps (13-14) on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning at Community Field tonight. The Whitecaps committed a season-high seven errors and the Bees set season-highs in runs and hits with 14. The win gave the Bees a 3-1 win in the series, marking the first series win against West Michigan since 1998.
Bees' starter Matt Campbell got off to a rough start. He walked the leadoff man to start a five-run top of the first inning that included three walks, an error, and two-run singles by Wilkin Ramirez and Josh Lee. The Bees came right back in the bottom of the first against Jair Jurrjens with three runs of their own thanks to RBI doubles by Brian McFall and Eddie Solis and an RBI single by Alan Moye. All of the runs were unearned after an error by Ramirez at third base. Mario Lisson added an RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game at five.
The Whitecaps got the lead back against Campbell in the top of the fifth. Ramirez led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt single by Luis Sabino, and scored as Josh Lee hit into a double play. Campbell gave way to Gabe DeHoyos for the sixth and the Whitecaps added an unearned run on two singles, a passed ball, and a wild pitch to extend their lead to 7-5.
The Bees came back in the bottom of the sixth against Dan Konecny in relief. Grana reached on another Ramirez error to start the inning. After a popout, Lisson and McFall walked. Rusty Brwon followed with a chopper in the hole between second and third. The shortstop Brent Dlugach fielded the ball, but threw it into right field trying to get the force at second. Two runs scored to tie the game and the runners were at second and third. Moye flew out in foul territory down the right field line, but deep enough for McFall to score and give the Bees their first lead at 8-7.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Konecny walked Lisson and McFall again and Brown and Moye followed with RBI singles to extend the Bees' lead to 10-7 going into the ninth. DeHoyos went back out for his fourth inning in relief and was greeted by a swinging bunt single from Jeff Frazier who went to second on a throwing error by Grana. After a walk and a strikeout, Ramirez lined a double to right-center that made it 10-8 and knocked DeHoyos out of the game. Adam Rowe came in and got Sabino to bounce to third and when Ramirez ran from second, forced Parrish to get tagged out leaving third as Sabino raced all the way to second base. That was big because Lee followed with a ground-rule double to left that drove in two and tied the game.
Rowe (3-0) got out of the inning and became the winning pitcher when Miguel Vega doubled to leadoff the bottom of the ninth and Grana bunted pinch-runner Ed Lucas to third. Geraldo Valentin popped out to bring up Lisson who got to a 3-0 count before being intentionally walked. McFall was next and popped the first pitch he saw into shallow right field. Second baseman Brooks Colvin raced out, overran the ball by a step, and as he reached back the ball hit him in the glove and dropped to the ground as the final Whitecaps error led to winning run. Tony Peralta (0-1) was on the mound and suffered the loss.
The Bees head on the road tomorrow night to start a four-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RH Billy Buckner (1-4, 5.14) will start for the Bees against RH Bill Edwards (2-1, 3.38) for the Kernels. The game will start at 6:30 and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
