Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY -The Tri-City ValleyCats scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, and were also helped by a dominating performance from their bullpen, en route to topping the visiting Batavia Muckdogs 8-4 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Saturday night.

One night after he hit a three-run walk-off home run to defeat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Tri-City left fielder Terrell Joyce hit a bases-loaded double against the Muckdogs in the bottom of the first that scored three runs, giving the 'Cats a 4-1 lead.

Jose Solano and Ariel Ovando followed Joyce with RBI base hits of their own, as the ValleyCats sent 10 men to the plate in the six-run first.

Alex Hernandez added to the scoring when he led off the bottom of the second frame by lining a 1-2 changeup from Muckdogs starting pitcher Steven Farnworth over the left field fence for his second home run of the season. The long ball gave the ValleyCats a 7-1 lead.

Batavia was able to trim the lead in half, thanks to two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. However, ValleyCats third baseman Nick Tanielu drove home shortstop Mott Hyde with a two-out double in the sixth inning, stretching the Tri-City lead to 8-4.

'Cats relievers Kevin Ferguson, Raul Rivera, and Jordan Mills combined to throw four scoreless innings, striking out a total of seven batters without allowing a base hit. The left-handed Ferguson struck out one batter in a scoreless sixth inning, while righty Raul Rivera pitched a perfect seventh and eighth, striking out the side on nine pitches in his final frame. The southpaw Jordan Mills then worked around a walk to strike out the side in the ninth to close out the Tri-City victory.

Seven different ValleyCats contributed at least one hit and six drove home at least one run. Hernandez finished 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Hyde (2-4, 2B, 2R), Tanielu (2-3, 2B, RBI, 2R) and Solano (2-4, 2B, R, RBI) also posted multi-hit games.

Earning the win for Tri-City was right-hander Troy Scribner (7-1). He worked five innings, allowing four runs and striking out three.

The ValleyCats and Muckdogs will resume their series tomorrow at 5:00pm for game two of this three-game set. On the mound for Tri-City will be RHP Francis Ramirez (2-4, 4.97) with LHP Scott Squier (1-1, 2.25) going for Batavia.
