Lake Monsters Earn Three-Run Second Inning In A 3-2 Win
August 2, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored all three of their runs in the second inning on a Gabriel Santana two-run homer and Ben McQuown RBI double, but it was enough to hold off the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 3-2 in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.
Santana, who entered the game 6-for-42 over his previous 13 games, smacked his first home run of the season just inside the foul pole down the leftfield line on a 1-1 pitch from Scrappers starter Sean Brady to give the Lake Monsters a 2-0 lead. Jose Chavez followed by reaching safely on a throwing error and McQuown lined a two-out RBI double to rightfield, plating Chavez with an unearned run that would prove to be the difference in the game.
Vermont starter A.J. Burke (4-2) retired the first eight batters he faced and allowed just an infield single over the first three inning, but Mahoning Valley used three doubles in the fourth inning to score two runs. Steven Patterson led off the fourth with a double and scored one-out later on a long Francisco Mejia double to centerfield. Then with outs D'Vone McClure doubled home Mejia to cut the Lake Monsters lead to 3-2.
Burke stranded McClure at second to end the fourth, then tossed a 1-2-3 fifth inning to finish with two runs allowed on four hits with three strikeouts. Jordan Schwartz came on in relief of Burke in the sixth and tossed two scoreless innings, while Corey Walter struckout the final two batters of the eighth after giving up a one-out single. Koby Gauna came on in the ninth and gave up a one-out single before getting Drake Roberts to hit into a game-ending double play for his fifth save of the season. With the four scoreless innings of relief, the Vermont bullpen has now allowed just one earned run over their last 20 2/3 ininngs.
Santana and McQuown both had two hits for Vermont (19-30), which has won two straight games with three runs scored after beginning the season 1-26 when scoring less than five runs in a game. Yonathan Mendoza was 2-for-3 for Mahoning Valley (21-28), while Brady allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings for the loss.
Vermont has won three of its first four games on the six-game homestand and will try to win a season-high three straight games when they host Mahoning Valley on Sunday at 5:05 pm. Gates will open at 4:00 pm for CHAMP's Birthday presented by Merchant's Bank with lots of pre-game birthday activities and then a post-game "Have A Catch" on the field with the first 150 kids receiving a free baseball.
