Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Williamsport, PA- The Aberdeen IronBirds took an early 1-0 lead on the Williamsport Crosscutters, but the hosts scored five unanswered runs between the fourth and sixth innings, taking a 5-1 series opening win.

In the top of the first inning, Alex Murphy hit a one out grounder to third and reached on an error. Austin Anderson then came up and hit a ground ball a few feet out in front of home plate. Catcher Wilson Garcia tried to go to second to get the double play started, but his throw went into center field, allowing Murphy to get to third and Anderson to reach first on a fielder's choice. Riley Palmer then stepped up and on an 0-1 pitch, lifted a fly ball to left field that allowed Murphy to score, making it 1-0 Aberdeen.

Williamsport got on the board in the fourth. After getting just one hit in the first three innings off of Aberdeen's John Means, the Crosscutters got three consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Garcia came up big for Williamsport putting a single through the left side and giving the Crosscutters a 2-1 lead.

Means did not make it out of the sixth, as he went 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

Stefan Crichton relieved Means in the fourth and got out of the inning, but found trouble in the fifth. He allowed a leadoff double to Cord Sandberg and Jiandido Tromp belted a two run home run to left, increasing the Williamsport lead to 4-1.

The Crosscutters added their final run in the sixth. Robinson Torres walked to lead off the inning and Emmanuel Marrero doubled to right field, scoring Torres, making it 5-1.

The IronBirds went in order in each of the last three innings, falling to 17-31 with the loss.

Aberdeen will look to even the series tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. when Stephen Tarpley gets the start. He will be opposed by Williamsport's RHP Mitch Gueller.
