Six Run Fifth Pushes Florence to Series Win over Boomers

FLORENCE, Ky. - The Florence Freedom scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take control and post a 10-4 win over the Schaumburg Boomers in the rubber game of a road series on Thursday night.
Schaumburg opened the scoring on a deep single to right off the bat of Steve McQuail in the top of the first, bringing home Frank Pfister. Florence opened a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third. The Boomers were able to tie the game on an RBI single from Michael Valadez in the top of the fifth, which scored Mike Demperio, who tripled. The big blow for Florence in the fifth was a grand slam off the bat of Ryan Skellie to put the game away. The slam came against Danny Jimenez, who suffered the loss after allowing eight runs in five innings. Schaumburg registered four extra-base hits in the loss, a season high. Valadez finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
The roadtrip will continue this weekend as the Boomers open a three-game series with the 2012 West Division Champion Gateway Grizzlies on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Cody Griebling (0-0, 3.00) is scheduled to start for the Boomers opposite RHP JaVaun West (0-0, 1.80).
