LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford Aviators, presented by Pearson, were able to jump out to a lead against the visiting Washington Wild Things Thursday evening but were unable to hold the lead, losing by a final score of 8-3.

Rockford (1-5) scored a run in the third when Ted Obregon grounded to second to bring in Ray Hernandez and take a 1-0 lead.

Washington (3-3) tied it up in the next half-inning on a lead-off home run by C.J. Beatty, his second of the series.

The Aviators retook the lead in the fourth. Kenny Bryant led off with a double and later scored on a Hernandez RBI single to make it 2-1.

The Wild Things plated three in the fifth and two unearned runs in the sixth to jump out to a 6-2 lead.

Matt Greener singled for Rockford in the sixth and later scored when Jake Luce was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the Washington lead to 6-3.

The first two Washington batters reached base in the seventh, an RBI fielder's choice by Rick Devereaux brought home Jovan Rosa and an error by shortstop Ray Hernandez, who misplayed a throw by Greg Van Horn in an attempt to catch a runner stealing, allowed Stewart Ijames to score and put the Wild Things up 8-3, the eventual final score.

Left-hander Shawn Smith started for Washington and picked up his first win of the season. Rockford starter Trevor Harden, now 1-1 on the season, took the loss.

Rockford will play its first road game of the season when they head to Traverse City to take on the Beach Bums Friday at 6:05 p.m.
