
Pitching Solid Despite Loss

Marion, IL - Southern Illinois dropped their first series in 2013, losing 3-1 on Thursday night to the Lake Erie Crushers. Miners starting pitcher Brian Oliver earned his first loss of the season despite pitching six solid innings. He gave up three runs and struck out five batters with two walks.
The Miners got on the board early 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning off Crushers starting pitcher Matt Rein as center fielder Tyler Hall scored on a throwing error by catcher Emmanuel Quilles. Hall led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a base hit by short stop Tyler Stubblefield. Lake Erie tied the game at one in the top of the third inning off Miners starting pitchiner Brian Oliver.
Lake Erie added another run in the top of the sixth inning as Crushers third baseman Andrew Davis hit a solo home run off Oliver to give the Crushers a 3-1 lead. Oliver would finish the inning and hand it over to the bullpen. MIners reliever Drew Bailey struck out four batters in two innings and Reese McGraw pitched a solid ninth inning, recording one strikeout.
The Miners would threaten in the bottom of the ninth inning as Crushers reliever Matt Smith loaded the bases but would strikeout Jason Ganek to end the game. The Miners would fall to 3-3 on the season.
Southern Illinois travels to Washington this weekend as they send LHP Richard Sullivan to the mound in search of his second win. First pitch will get underway at 6:05 pm.
