Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

Despite a late rally in game one, the Traverse City Beach Bums were unable to get the last hit necessary to complete a comeback and then dropped a game two pitchers duel falling in both ends of a doubleheader to the Evansville Otters by scores of 6-5 and 4-1 on Thursday night.

Trailing game one 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Traverse City plated a run after a walk by Sean Gusrang and a single by Zach Kometani put runners on the corners for Taylor Wrenn who singled to plate Gusrang and make it a 6-2 ballgame.

In the seventh, Ryan Still walked to lead off the inning followed by a single by Scott Woodward. Two batters later, Chase Burch hit a towering fly ball that was mishandled by Deaun Williams in left, allowing Burch to reach first and load the bases. Gusrang came up and lined a double down the rightfield line, scoring Still and Woodward to cut the Evansville lead to 6-4. Kometani was next up and hit a ball to deep right, bringing home Burch with the sacrifice fly to make it 6-5. The comeback was thwarted, however, as Wrenn hit a ball had, but right to the first baseman Nick Schwaner to end the game.

The game one victory went to Bryce Morrow (1-1) who went 6.1 innings. Matt Zielinski recorded the last two outs for the save. Jacob Clem (0-2) took the loss for TC.

In game two, the teams traded third inning runs as the Otters scored in the top of the inning on a John Schultz double to score Sam Mahoney who had walked. The Beach Bums responded in the bottom of the frame when Burch came through with a two out single to score Woodward who doubled two batters earlier.

Evansville took the game two lead for good in the fifth as they loaded up the bases with no outs. Johnny Omahen was able to get Frank Martinez to fly out for the first out of the inning. Schwaner grounded out for the second out of the stanza as a run scored to make it 2-1. Omahen battled back from a 3-0 coun to John Nester to get it to 3-2 before Nester stroked a double to left to bring around the two remaining runners and create the game's final margin.

Matt Crim (1-1) picked up the game two win with Omahen (0-2) suffering the tough luck loss.

Nick Capito was a bright spot for the Beach Bums pitching staff, tossing a pair of scoreless innings to keep TC in game two until the final out.
