Last time out

Corey Kimes went seven plus innings of two-run baseball, Javan Williams tallied three hits, and the Joliet Slammers knocked off the Gateway Grizzlies by a final score of 3-2 Wednesday night. In the bottom of the first with the bases loaded, right fielder Jet Butler hit a line drive that hit the field umpire, scoring Jonathan Johnson from third and refilling the bases after the dead ball. Grant DeBruin and Goose Kallunki led off the top of the second with back-to-back singles. Williams delivered a two-out, RBI single, tying the game. The game would remain tied until the sixth inning. Michael Wing and Kyle Maunus led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Seth Schwindenhammer drove in Wing on a RBI single. DeBruin would hit a sacrifice fly to drive Maunus home to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Gateway would get one back but it would not be enough as Joliet evened the series at one each.

For Starters...

Evan Anundsen makes his second start of the year for Joliet. He started on Opening Night and struck out nine Traverse City Beach Bums in six innings to pick up the victory. The 25-year old from Littleton, Colorado was a fourth round selection of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2006 draft out of Columbine High School. He spent the past seven seasons pitching in the Milwaukee organization and started 24 games for the Double-A Huntsville Stars in 2012. Anundsen's best season as a professional came in 2009 when he posted a 2.69 ERA in 23 starts for the High Single-A Brevard County Manatees.

Comeback kids...

The opponent has scored first in every game the Slammers have played so far in 2013 but the Slammers have shown an ability to rally as they are 3-2 on the season.

Starting pitching is strong...

Joliet has thrown each of their starting pitchers once so far this season and each of them went at least five innings and gave up two or fewer runs.

So is the bullpen...

Slammers' relievers have a 1.35 ERA in 13.1 innings so far.

May days...

The Slammers have finished .500 or better in May the past two seasons.

Gateway connections...

Joliet manager Mike Breyman played for the Grizzlies from 2004-2008. He was their bench coach in 2009 and hitting coach in 2012. Reliever Jonathan Gonzalez, starter Brett Zawacki and INF Jerod Yakubik all played for the Grizzlies in 2012.

They gone!

The Slammers' pitching staff struck out 14 batters Opening Night, tying the team record for most strikeouts in one game.

A new era...

The Slammers enter the 2013 campaign with an entirely new coaching staff and an almost completely new roster. Manager Mike Breyman enters his first year as the team's skipper while Eric Coleman and Dave Garcia will serve as the team's new pitching and hitting coaches respectively. All three have experience coaching in the Frontier League and Breyman is a former Frontier League Coach of the Year. Coleman has managerial experience in the league with Oakland County. Meanwhile, only six players remain from the 2012 team (Ben Hewett, who played the first part of the year with Joliet, Kyle Maunus, Chase Doremus, Jacob Sanchez, Mike Barsotti and David Christensen). Only Maunus and Hewett remain from the 2011 championship squad.

Injury Report...

OF David Christensen (groin) and LHP David Jensen (shoulder) are currently on the Injured List for Joliet.
