Evansville Otters News Release

(TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN) - The Evansville Otters leapt ahead early and held on late for a 6-5 win against Traverse City in game one of the doubleheader.

First baseman Nick Schwaner had four hits in the game including a two-run home run in the first inning.

That home run would give Evansville their first lead to begin a game this season.

After allowing a first inning run, Evansville starting pitcher Bryce Morrow settled into a groove. Holding the 2-1 lead, the Caledonia, Michigan native left the bases loaded in the second and retired eight straight batters in a row at one point.

The Otters would then add to their lead with a four run fourth inning. Infielder Steve Marino hit an RBI double and Ryan KResky followed later with a double that scored two more. Outfielder John Schultz capped the inning with a run producing single to center field that created a 6-1 Otters lead.

The Beach Bums scored a run in the sixth inning and then rallied for more runs in the seventh. Following a fielding error, Morrow would leave the game with the bases loaded and one out. Closer Eric Massingham entered the game but allowed a two run single and a sacrifice fly. Leading just by a run, Massingham would leave the tying run at third by recording a groundout to end the game.

Evansville would win the first game of the doubleheader, their first win at Traverse City since June 2010.

Morrow (1-1) earns the victory, yielding five runs (four earned) in 6.1 innings. Jacob Clem (0-2) takes the loss for Traverse City after yielding six runs in 3.2 innings. Massingham secured his second save in the victory.

The second game of the doubleheader will feature Otters left-hander Matt Crim (0-1, 11.25 ERA) against Beach Bums righty Johnny Omahen (0-1, 9.64 ERA). After the doubleheader, the Evansville Otters will return home for a three game weekend series against the Windy City Thunderbolts. It is Eastland Mall Memorial Day Weekend at Bosse Field with games scheduled for Friday, May 24 (6:35 pm CDT), Saturday, May 25 (6:35 pm CDT) and Sunday, May 26 (6:35 pm CDT).
