(Edmonton) The local chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada has named its Edmonton Eskimo nominees for the Rogers AT&T CFL Player Awards.
Jason Maas has been selected as the club's Outstanding Player. Maas has enjoyed an outstanding season completing 361 of 549 passes for 5270 yards and 31 touchdowns. Maas became only the second quarterback in team history to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a season. Maas also set a new CFL standard with 22 consecutive completions versus Winnipeg in July. This is the second nomination for Maas, the first coming in 2001.
Sean Fleming has been selected as the Eskimos' Outstanding Canadian. Excelling in the role of both place kicker and punter, Fleming currently leads the CFL scoring race by 18 points and hit on 78 per cent of his field goals in 2004. This is Fleming's third nomination in this category with others coming in 2001 and 2002.
Malcolm Frank gets the nod as the Green and Gold's Outstanding Defensive Player. Five of Frank's seven interceptions were returned for touchdowns which set a new CFL record. Frank also chipped in with 68 defensive tackles and four pass knockdowns.
Kevin Lefsrud gets the nomination as the Eskimos' Outstanding Lineman. Demonstrating determination and versatility, Lefsrud moved from guard to centre after an injury to Tim Prinsen.
Winston October secured his second Eskimo Outstanding Special Teams Player nomination with a stand-out season compiling 874 punt return yards, 1073 yards on kick-off returns and 376 yards on missed field goal returns. October also added 79 receiving yards for a combined yardage total of 2432.
Mathieu Bertrand may have been a quarterback marvel at Laval, but his ability to convert his skills to the position of fullback has earned him the Eskimo nomination as Outstanding Rookie. Clearing the way for his boyhood hero Mike Pringle, Bertrand saw double duty in the Eskimo backfield and on special teams.
The Edmonton Eskimos have qualified for the play-offs for a 33rd consecutive season. For more information on the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club, please visit our web site at www.esks.com.
