Commissioner's Statement
Published on October 26, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Toronto, Ontario â Following this past weekend's Calgary Stampeders versus BC Lions game, allegations of inappropriate racial comments were made by Stampeder Nikolas Lewis toward an unidentified game official.
In discussions over the weekend, on Monday and as recently as this afternoon, the Calgary Stampeders' organization has asked for additional time to complete their own internal investigation in advance of League intervention.
CFL Commissioner Tom Wright reiterated the League's strong position regarding this alleged incident noting, "Upon receipt of a statement from the player and the Calgary Stampeders detailing the complaint, the CFL will conduct a full and thorough investigation. At the same time, I want to reiterate that there is zero tolerance in this League for any form of racism or racial discrimination in any role, on or off the field, and at any level. Any complaint of such nature, validated through a subsequent investigation, would result in the appropriate penalties".
